FHE

This year, Ben and I have committed to doing FHE every Monday night. We decided on a theme that is borrowed from my friend Jenni Taysom who blogged about her FHE plans last year. It is scripture heroes. This month's hero is Nephi. We are learning the song, "Hold to the Rod," memorizing scripture 1 Nephi 3:7, and following all the fun adventures of Nephi as he and his family crossed the wilderness.

The first week was the brass plates. Our activity was to make and hang up a scripture sticker chart to motivate us in our family scripture reading. The second week was Lehi's dream. For the activity, we went on a hunt. We started with a clue that lead us to the Iron Rod (A piece of PVC pipe). The clue with the Iron Rod lead us to the Great and Spacious Building (A building of blocks). The building clue lead us to the River of Water (A rolled up blue blanket. The river clue lead us to the mists of darkness (A dark room with some air freshener sprayed in the air). The mist clue lead us to the tree of life (one of our hibiscus plants that is wintering in the house). The FHE treat was some lemon bars, made from the fruit of the tree. This week was Nephi breaks his bow.

Ben picked up some dowel rods from Michaels for 50 cents. We cut them into four pieces and cut notches in the top and bottom. Then we strung some string around them to make bows. Unfortunately, two of them broke while being strung and one broke when we were using it. We still have one working bow that is hidden safely away. For arrows, I was planning to use straws (nice and safe). Unfortunately, the kids had gotten to my straws and I only had one left. We used lollipop sticks instead. Ben took some of the sticks leftover from the broken bows and made an arrow, much to my exasperation. We had to be really careful with it because it was pretty powerful. Ben ended up punching three or four holes in my boar drawing with it. Men!
